Program for Alternative Learning (PAL)

The RCDSB is committed to providing alternative learning for secondary school students who have experienced difficulties in meeting with success in the regular school environment.

The Program for Alternative Learning offers students a supportive alternative site where they can obtain credits and work on personal, social and emotional issues surrounding the difficulties they experienced in high school.

The outcome of a placement in the program is ultimately for the student to return to their home school to complete their high school diploma.

Process for Registration

Secondary school principals may refer students currently enrolled in school to register for the program for alternative learning. After the referral, an intake interview with the student, parent/guardian, a representative of the Student Success team and the principal(or designate) of Continuing Education takes place to discuss the student's placement in the program.  Individuals not currently enrolled in a secondary school must make arrangements to meet with the principal of the Continuing and Community Education. In some cases, students are assessed to determine their basic skills.
